A colloquium dedicated to Prof. Liviu Rotman's comprehensive study on the Jewish Community in Romania in the Modern Era, entitled, "New Trends in Shtetl Research."
This research was made possible through the kind support of the David Berg Foundation.

March 3-4, 2009
An international Junior Scholars Conference on Jewish Art held at Tel Aviv University and organized by the Center's Visual Culture Project, in cooperation with the Lester and Sally Entin Faculity of Humanities and the Yolanda and David Katz Faculty of the Arts.
Young researchers from Israel and abroad took part in the conference and keynote lectures were delivered by Prof. Stefan Reif, Emeritus Professor of Medieval Hebrew and Fellow of St. John's College at the University of Cambridge, and Prof. Richard Cohen of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The conference also included a special tour of the Gross Family Collection in Ramat Aviv.

The Jews in Islamic Countries and their Culture unit organized the third annual workshop for colleagues of Kedmata: The Israeli Center for the Study of Sephardic and Mizrachi Jewry, in which members of Kedmata, the Ben-Zvi Institute for the Study of Jewish Communities of the East, and the Jews of Islamic Countries Archiving Project took part, with the participation of Professor Yaron Tsur, the director of the unit.

A symposium dedicated to Esther Meir-Glitzenstein's new book: "Between Baghdad and Ramat-Gan: Iraqi Natives in Israel" (Hebrew). The symposium was sponsored by the Lester and Sally Entin Faculty of Humanities, the Chaim Rosenberg School of Jewish Studies, the Chaim Weizmann Institute for the Study of Zionism and Israel, Yad Ben Zvi, and the Unit for the study of Jews in Islamic Countries and their Culture in the Goldstein-Goren Diaspora Research Center, with the participation of Professor Yaron Tsur, the director of the unit.

May 18-20, 2009
An international conference on the topic: "Barbarians and Jews: Jews and Judaism in the Early Medieval West (5th-9th Centuries)." This conference was held at both Tel Aviv University (May 18-19) and the Open University (May 20).
The conference was organized by the Goldstein-Goren Diaspora Research Center, in collaboration with the Open University and the Hochschule für Jüdische Studien in Heidelberg, Germany.

A symposium entitled, "Reflections on the Creation of Sefer Jossipon in Three Languages (Hebrew, Arabic, and Judeo-Arabic) and its Cultural Significance" was held at Tel Aviv University in honor of the publication of Sefer Yoseph ben Gurion Ha-Aravi by Shulamit Sela z"l. The event was organized by the Center, in collaboration with the Ben Zvi Institute for the Study of Jewish Communities of the East.

The Center organized an international conference entitled, "Judaea/Palaestina, Babylon and Rome: Jews in the Roman, Parthian and Sassanian Empires—In Honour of Professor Aharon Oppenheimer on the Occasion of His Retirement." Prof. Oppenheimer was the Center's director in 1997-2002 and a senior faculty member of the Jewish History Department of Tel Aviv University.
