Ban Ki-moon, is a South Korean  Statesman and politician, and the current Secretary-General of the United Nations. Before becoming  Secretary-General, Ban was a career diplomat in South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and  in the United Nations. His priorities have been to mobilize world leaders around a set of new global challenges, from climate change and economic upheaval to pandemics and increasing pressures involving food, energy and water. He has sought to be a bridge-builder, to give voice to the world's poorest and most vulnerable people, and to strengthen the Organization itself. "I grew up in war", the Secretary-General has said, "and saw the United Nations help my country to recover and rebuild. That experience was a big part of what led me to pursue a career in public service. As Secretary-General, I am determined to see this Organization deliver tangible, meaningful results, that advance peace, development and human rights." One of the Secretary-General's first major initiatives was the 2007 Climate Change Summit, followed by extensive diplomatic efforts that have helped put the issue at the forefront of the global agenda.

Manuel Valls was elected Mayor of Evry, France, in March 2001, and a member of the first district of Essonne. In 2008 he was reelected , but gave up the mandate in 2012 following his appointment to the government. He was appointed Interior Minister in the government of Jean-Marc Ayrault from 2012 to 2014, when he became the head of government. In 2014, Francois Hollande appointed him to the post of Prime Minister. He resigned this position to run for the Socialist primary for President in 2017. A left-wing Jewish filmmaker from Paris was too disappointed with the ruling Socialists under Franch President Francois Hollande to vote for them a second time in elections scheduled for April. But so too is he disgusted by the Muslim-baiting of the center-and-far-right candidates to vote for them either. That changed when Prime Minister Manuel Valls announced his candidacy just two days after Hollande said he would not seek a second term, citing polls showing he is the least popular French President in decades. Many French Jews admire the 54-year-old Valls for his tough stance against antisemitism. He has distinguished himself from other French leaders by calling anti-Zionism a form of antisemitism. And he has led a relentless legal assault on the antisemitic comedian and provocateur Dieudonne M'bala M'bala. These moves and others have earned him a hero status among France's Jewish community of 500,000. More significantly for his presidential prospects, his reputation as a hard-liner with a strong law-and-order agenda means he is widely seen as the left's best hope for remaining in power amid a surge in right-wing popularity, fueled in part by terrorist attacks that have claimed hundreds of lives over the past year.
